Schwinn 2007 Voyageur GS
What happened
My bike was stolen from a locked bicycle storage area in the basement of my apartment complex. Only apartment tenants and staff should have access to this room. There was a bike reported stolen from the same room only two months ago--at that time, the doors to the storage area could be left unlocked or propped open. After that incident, the landlord modified the locks so they could not be left unlocked, and letters were posted warning tenants to not prop doors open and to lock their bikes. I locked my bike at 11PM, and saw nothing unusual. The doors were closed and locked. I returned the following morning at 9:55AM and found my bike missing. To my knowledge, no other bikes were missing from the area. The locked nature of the bike storage area implies that either someone unauthorized has keys to the room, or that someone within the apartment complex stole my bike. I searched the rest of the basements in the apartment complex; my bike was not there. I've filed a police report, and reported the theft to my landlord, who has promised to contact the City of Evanston Police Department about strengthening the security of the bike storage area.
